Dudley Dix Yacht Design; cover, cost and conditions

Dudley Dix Yacht Design is the office of yacht designer Dudley Dix, born in Cape Town and now working from Virginia Beach in the United States. He is known for the radius chine plywood method, which makes fairly light boats quick and inexpensive to build, and he also draws for steel, aluminium and wood epoxy. In his own Didi 38 Black Cat he sailed from 1995 to 2000, crossing the South Atlantic three times. Since this is a design office rather than a yard, each boat follows a Dix plan while builder and material can differ.

Our records hold ten entries, all sailing yachts, under nine names: the Hout Bay 40 appears twice, once for 1984 to 1992 at 12.2 metres and once for 1995 to 2003 at 12.09 metres. The Didi line has the Didi 26 and Didi 38, the Hout Bay line adds the 50 GS, and the Ankon 40, Little Creek 47, Pratique 35, Salty dog and Dix 64 stand alone. Sizes run from the 8 metre Didi 26 to the 19.5 metre Dix 64.

Two boats from the same plan can be very different in practice, so the build record of each hull is worth reading. Plywood boats need sound paint and epoxy coating and a dry winter, steel boats watch for rust in hidden corners. Many of these designs were drawn with ocean passages in mind and suit owners who sail far.
