Behind this name stands a design office rather than a yard. Ericus Gerhardus van de Stadt, born in 1910 and died in 1999, completed his training as a naval architect in 1932 and began at Zaandam near Amsterdam. Practices that are taken for granted today go back to him: the fin keel combined with a free standing balanced rudder, very fast yachts in plywood, and early series production in glassfibre. He gave up his own works in 1978 and worked afterwards purely as a designer. You recognise his drawings by the clean plain line, the low deckhouse and a hull narrow for its length.
Our model records list 65 designs from this office: 56 sailing yachts, eight sailing boats and one motor yacht. The oldest recorded design, the Zeester, is carried with build years from 1927; the newest boats come from current production. Sixty series are recorded: the numbered types Van de Stadt 34, 37, 44 and 50, the Stadtline 38, and named designs such as Caribbean, Madeira, Moorea 45, Helena and Helena 38, Norman 40, Samoa, Agari, Atlas, Bries, Cadeira, Dolphin, Forna and Spanker. Lengths run from 4.5 to 22.4 metres, half the designs between 9 and 13.5 metres.
A design office leaves one practical mark on its boats: the same drawing was built by different yards and sometimes by owners, in timber, in glassfibre and in steel. Two boats of the same type can therefore be very different objects, and the material and the builder say more about a particular hull than the type name does. On a boat built from plans the build file is its history.
