East Coast Yachts was Bruce Fairlie's yard at Gosford, north of Sydney in New South Wales. Fairlie owned and ran the business and built a number of yachts there, but only one of them was his own design: the Clansman 30. It counts as one of the first production glassfibre yachts in Australia. The hull is solid laminate, sprayed with a chopper gun into a female mould, and the deck combines glassfibre and plywood. Underneath sits a full keel, and the mast is stepped on deck on an aluminium channel above the bulkheads. One Clansman showed what the design can do by sailing from Australia to the east coast of the United States. For the yard's other two designs, the plans came from Peter Cole.

These are solid, heavy boats, and their age shows in specific places. On a Clansman the chainplates fastened to the hull, the u-bolts for the shrouds and the deck-stepped mast with its supporting structure deserve close inspection, and the plywood in the deck should be checked for moisture. Full-keel yachts of this kind track well offshore but need room and patience in a tight marina. Many of them have been sailed long distances, so engine hours, tankage and the condition of the rudder fittings tell more than the year of build. A boat brought over from Australia should come with its survey history and a clear chain of ownership.
