Element 6 Evolution is a boatyard near Bangkok in Thailand. Pom Green, John Higham and Pramote Indranoi set it up in 2016 after working together at Composite Marine International, with the aim of building a dedicated plant for one-design racing boats. The yard produces craft such as the ILCA dinghy and the Olympic Nacra 17 catamaran. It works with epoxy resin, glassfibre and foam core, mills its tooling by CNC and cuts structural parts digitally so that each hull matches the next. That consistency is the whole point of a one-design class: on the race course the sailing should decide, not the kit.
Our model records hold one design for Element Six, the Switch One Design, filed as a sailing dinghy of 3.9 metres. The listed build years run from 2021 to 2025; the boat was officially launched in March 2024 after several years of development. The Italian twin brothers Stefano and Gian Ferrighi drew it as a single-handed foiler for a wide range of sailors. The hull is carbon over a PVC core, the foils are prepreg carbon, and the boat is 2.25 metres wide across the trampolines. Three sail sizes are offered, and switching between them only means changing the bottom section of the three-piece mast. The Switch is not a Moth but a class of its own.
A foiling dinghy rewards careful handling ashore. Check the front and rear edges of the foils for chips, the foil case for cracks and the wand or ride-height mechanism for play. Carbon masts dislike being dropped, so inspect the joints of the three sections. Trampolines and their frames take a beating in capsizes and should be looked at closely on a used boat. Sails age faster than the hull, and racing sailors often own more than one size. A padded launching trolley and road trailer protect the foils, which are the most vulnerable part when the boat is out of the water.
