Eleva Yachts; cover, cost and conditions

Eleva Yachts builds in Fano on the Adriatic coast, a short way from Pesaro. The brand grew out of Carbon Line, a yard founded in 2013 that mainly produces motor yachts and large composite parts by vacuum infusion. The Eleva sailing yachts are drawn by the Italian designer Giovanni Ceccarelli. Construction is glassfibre sandwich with a PVC foam core and vinylester resin; hull and floor structure are laminated together in a single operation, and highly loaded areas are reinforced with carbon fibre. An Eleva is easy to recognise by the pronounced kink in the deck line: the foredeck rises towards the bow and sits higher than the cockpit, which gives volume below and 1.88 metres of headroom forward.

Our model records list three Eleva sailing yachts, and all three reach into the most recent build years. The Eleva 50 at 16.5 metres has the longest record, starting in 2015. The Eleva 42 measures 12.5 metres and is listed from 2018 in two versions that differ below the waterline and aloft. The 42 Mediterraneo carries a deep T-keel with 2.50 metres of draft and a sporty sail plan for Mediterranean conditions. The 42 Ocean is set up for longer passages, with a shorter rig, an L-keel, two metres of draft and more ballast. The range therefore spans two sizes, 12.5 and 16.5 metres, and nothing under twelve metres.

A young composite yacht like an Eleva asks for a different kind of attention than an old cruiser. Sandwich laminates should be checked for core moisture wherever fittings pass through the deck, and carbon reinforcements around chainplates and mast step deserve a look after any hard grounding. With a deep T-keel, the 42 Mediterraneo needs care in shallow anchorages, while the Ocean version gives up some draft for easier access to bays. Many of these boats are sailed in the Mediterranean in summer and lie ashore in winter, so the yard records, the age of the standing rigging and the condition of the sails tell a buyer a lot.

What this means for the cover

As the Eleva 42 Mediterraneo, Eleva 42 Ocean and Eleva 50 by Eleva Yachts series are still in

production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the Eleva 42 Mediterraneo, Eleva 42 Ocean, Eleva 50 by Eleva Yachts series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
