Elliott; cover, cost and conditions
The Elliott name belongs to New Zealand yacht designer Greg Elliott. He started out with a boatbuilding apprenticeship in Auckland and has since drawn everything from small keelboats for youth training to maxi yachts. In 1987 the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron commissioned a fleet of his Elliott 5.9 for match racing. His name travelled furthest with the Elliott 6m, picked as the Olympic keelboat for the women's match racing event at the 2012 Games. His designs share a sporting brief, from training boats for young sailors to offshore racers.
Our model records hold two designs. The Elliott 770 is listed as a sailing yacht, built from 1996 to 2006 and 7.7 metres long. She is a glassfibre trailer yacht with a lifting keel, in fact a centreboard with a bulb, and a fractional rig. The Elliott 6m is classed as a sailing boat, built from 2007 to 2014 and exactly 6 metres long. She sails with a crew of up to three and flies a symmetric spinnaker from a pole, as match racing demands. Both lines are closed, and neither reaches into the most recent build years in our records. Together they span a little over two decades, from the mid nineties to 2014.
The two boats age in different ways. An Elliott 6m has usually spent her life on a race course, so look closely at the hull for repaired collision marks, at the keel attachment and at the state of sails and running rigging. As a one design class, boats are easy to compare with each other. The Elliott 770 lives on her trailer, so the lifting mechanism, the centreboard case and the bulb fairing take the wear, along with the trailer itself: hubs, brakes and rollers. Check that the board drops and lifts cleanly before buying.

often differ widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the Elliott 6m by Elliott series: On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.
A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
For the Elliott 770 by Elliott series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
