Endeavour Yachts was founded by Reg Gardner, an electrical engineer with a family business who had built and raced timber dinghies and keelboats himself. In 1963 the deteriorating woodwork of his Thunderbird set him looking for a replacement that could be built in glassfibre. The result was the Endeavour 24, drawn by Gardner together with Len Hedges and John Bott. According to the sources the company traded from about 1965 to 1990, and besides the Endeavour yachts it built catamarans, trailer sailers, the Adams 8 and Adams 11 and GRP Dragons. Endeavours are recognisable by their plain fibreglass hulls of the sixties and seventies, and the 24 and 26 still race as classes of their own in Australia.
Our model records list six designs, five sailing yachts and one motorsailer. The Endeavour 24 is the oldest entry, starting in 1962 and running to 1989. It is joined by the 19 from 1965, the 26 from 1966, the 23 Viking and the 30 from 1970 and the 28 from 1971. All lines end in 1988 or 1989, so none reaches the most recent build years. The smallest is the Endeavour 19 at 5.79 metres, the largest the Endeavour 30 at 9.3 metres. The 23 Viking is listed as a motorsailer of 7.01 metres. Five of the six designs measure seven metres or more, so the range is mostly about small cruising yachts.
An Endeavour today carries thirty-five years or more on its hull. Early glassfibre boats were often laid up thick and have aged well, but deck fittings, chainplates and keel bolts still deserve a careful look. Check the deck core around stanchions and the mast step for moisture, and inspect the rudder for water ingress. Many boats have been re-engined and rewired over the decades, so ask for invoices. Owners' associations in Australia keep class records and can help date a hull, which is useful if a boat has made the long trip to Europe.
