Worth knowing
Ericson Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Ericson Yachts was a Californian sailboat builder from Orange County, at the heart of mid century American fibreglass boatbuilding. Its defining designer was Bruce King, who drew almost the entire core range and gave the boats their recognisable profile: a graceful sheer, low cabin trunks, a fine entry and a tumblehome stern. Production ended in 1990, after which Pacific Seacraft took over the tooling and rights and kept selected models going. The number in each name is close to the length in feet.
Our model records list twelve Ericson sailing yachts built between 1970 and 1987: eleven named Ericson plus the Independence 31. The range opens with the 7.61 metre Ericson 25+ and runs through the 27, 29, 30+, 32, 33, 35, 36, 37 and 38 to the 11.89 metre Ericson 39. Lengths are spread evenly, with three models each below 9 metres, between 9 and 10, between 10 and 11, and above. The 27 and 39 are the earliest, both from 1970, while the 25+, 33, 36 and the 9.18 metre Independence 31 run until 1987.
An Ericson today is a mature cruising boat, often with newer sails, electronics or engine than the hull. Keel bolts, chainplates and deck core are the places a survey looks hardest on boats of this age. The smaller models are at home on a mooring or in a club marina and can be craned each autumn, while the 37 to 39 footers make capable coastal cruisers for a couple or a small crew.
