The Escape Sailboat Company was based in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and ran as a division of Dynamic Dollies. The US Coast Guard manufacturer list shows it trading from March 1997 to October 2002; the company no longer exists. It made small, easy dinghies for newcomers and families, with names such as Mambo, Mango, Cha Cha, Captiva, Solsa and Rumba, plus the Play Cat catamaran and the Expedition models. Nearly every Escape shares one feature: the mainsail rolls up around the mast and there is no boom. Rigging, reefing and stowing become quick jobs, and nobody gets hit on the head when tacking.
Our model records list one design, the Escape Rumba dinghy at 3.9 metres, entered for build years 1995 to 2001. No entry runs into recent build years. The Rumba was the largest boat of the Escape family: about 1.5 metres wide, around 100 kilos and meant for three or four adults or a family. Her beam makes her far harder to capsize than a racing dinghy, and the low weight means a small trailer will do. The boat was later sold as the Escape 12; our records file her as the Rumba.
A used Rumba is simple, which makes the checks simple too. Unroll the mainsail completely and look for UV damage and torn seams along the luff, because the furled sail sits in the sun all season. The roller mechanism in the mast should turn freely, and the furling line must not be chafed. Check the hull around the daggerboard trunk and the rudder fittings for cracks, the usual weak spots on beach-launched dinghies. Spare parts are no longer made by the original company, though some are still kept in stock in the UK, so a complete boat is worth more than a cheap one with gaps.
