Essence is a yard in the Netherlands building sailing yachts with carbon hulls. The family starts with the Essence 33, drawn by Hoek Design: a daysailer that is nevertheless seaworthy. She carries a carbon mast with rod rigging, the vang, backstay and outhaul are hydraulic, and despite her length she can travel on a trailer. The larger designs extend the idea. The Essence 44 has a Mediterranean-style cockpit, one guest cabin and a draft of 2.5 metres, while the Essence 74 sleeps six guests in three cabins plus two crew. Both are certified for design category A, the open sea.
Our model records list five designs. The Essence 27 is entered as a sailing boat of 9.25 metres with build years from 2019 to 2024. The other four are sailing yachts that all start in 2019 and run into the most recent build years: the Essence 33 at 11.17 metres, the Essence 44 at 15.45 metres, the Essence 54 at 18.8 metres and the Essence 74 at 24.65 metres. The number in the name roughly matches the length in feet. Three of the five designs exceed 15 metres, so the range stretches from a trailerable daysailer to a crewed yacht. A yacht listing site says the Essence 33 has been built since 2010; in our records she starts in 2019.
Carbon hulls and rigs are light and stiff, but they need the right eyes on a used boat. A survey with ultrasound or tap testing around the keel and chainplates, and an inspection of the rod rigging and its terminals, belongs on every viewing. Hydraulic rams for vang, backstay and outhaul should hold pressure without seeping oil. The smaller boats are made for fast afternoon sailing close to home, while the 54 and 74 are built for longer passages with a professional crew. Sails in laminate or membrane have a limited life, so their age is worth knowing.
