Worth knowing
Esslinger & Abt Yachtbau; cover, cost and conditions
Esslinger & Abt was a yacht yard in Laupheim, Upper Swabia, about as far from the sea as a German boatbuilder can be. It is remembered above all for the Alpha, a sailing yacht drawn by the Dutch designer E. G. van de Stadt. The Alpha 32 measures 9.65 metres, and its lines trace back to the Pionier 10, a van de Stadt design that made its name in offshore racing during the seventies. Hulls were laid up in solid glassfibre with longitudinal stringers and bonded bulkheads. A collection hosted on the University of Ulm website documents the yard's boats, among them the Alpha 32, the e+a 1030 ketch, the e+a 40, the Klipper and the Sprinter. The e+a in a model name usually gives the origin away.
Our model records list twelve designs: eleven sailing yachts and one open sailing boat, the Classic 30 at 6.65 metres from 1967 to 1975. Build years run from 1962 to 2000, and no line reaches recent years. The oldest entry is the Clipper at 8.4 metres from 1962. The Alpha appears three times, as Alpha, Alpha 32 and e+a Alpha 32, all at 9.65 metres, and the e+a 1/2-Tonner from 1967 to 1975 shares that length. The Klipper at 8.85 metres and the Sprinter at 9.7 metres date from the sixties. The E + A 1030 measures 10.15 metres, the Warrior 38 11.58 metres and the Voyager 40 twelve metres. The longest boat is the e+a 40 at 12.2 metres, built from 1977.
These yachts are now decades old, so a used one is judged by how it has been looked after. A solid glassfibre hull with stringers is straightforward to survey: check for osmosis, for cracks where the stringers meet the hull and for movement around the keel bolts. Original standing rigging should have been replaced long ago; if not, it is the first job. Many boats from this yard sailed on lakes in southern Germany and Switzerland and may never have seen salt water, which helps the engine and fittings. Ask for sail age and engine hours, and on the ketch rigged 1030 check both masts and their steps.

For the Alpha 32, E + A 1030, Alpha by Esslinger & Abt Yachtbau and further series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For the Classic 30 by Esslinger & Abt Yachtbau series:
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.
A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
