The Diva 38 belongs to the Diva line, which goes back to the Swedish yard Fabola. Fabola was set up in 1958 in Rockneby, north of Kalmar, and took up glassfibre building early on. The first Diva appeared in 1982. Its prototype, the Diva 39, was built in the company's premises in central Stockholm, underneath the street at Slussen. Bernt Lindquist designed the Diva boats, and the Campus range as well. A Diva is a quick cruiser with a fractional rig, meaning the forestay meets the mast below the masthead. In our records the Diva 38 is filed under the maker name Fabav AB.
Our model records list one design from this maker, the Diva 38, a sailing yacht of 11.7 metres with build years from 1997 to 2008. Yard sources give 1999 as the start of production, so our records begin a little earlier. The boat has a beam of about 3.5 metres, draws just under two metres and displaces roughly six tonnes, with a fin keel and a spade rudder. The layout is unusual: the cockpit sits amidships and separates the helmsman from the guests, which leaves room for a large aft cabin below. There are three cabins in all. Within the family it sits between the older Diva 35 and the later Diva 34.
A fractional rig with a deep fin keel rewards a careful look when buying. Check the mast step and chainplates, the condition of the standing rigging and the age of the sails, because a boat like this is meant to be sailed actively. The centre cockpit brings long control lines and a separate aft cabin, so leads, blocks and hatches deserve attention too. Many of these yachts have spent their lives in the Swedish archipelagos, where rocks are close under the surface; a survey of the keel bolts and the area around the keel root is worthwhile.
