Fabola AB; cover, cost and conditions
Fabola is a Swedish yard from Rockneby, a little north of Kalmar on the Baltic coast. It was set up in 1958 and was among the Swedish firms that took up glassfibre early. Its most familiar boats are the Diva yachts, a family of sporty cruisers drawn by Bernt Lindquist. The prototype, a Diva 39, was not built in a waterside shed but in company premises in central Stockholm, at Slussen on the Old Town side. Diva names carry either a length in feet or a three digit type number, which helps when placing a boat.
Our model records list nine designs: eight sailing yachts and one smaller sailing boat. The oldest is the Scanper, a 6.78 metre boat listed from 1975 to 1982. The first Diva in the records is the Diva 39 from 1979, followed by the Kuster 29 from 1982 and the Diva 35 and Diva 45 from 1983. Around the turn of the nineties the Diva 355, 399 and 451 joined, built until 1999 to 2001. A late addition is the Diva 24, listed from 2009 to 2018 and, at 7.55 metres, the smallest boat after the Scanper. The largest are the Diva 45 and Diva 451 at close to 13.8 metres. No line reaches the most recent build years.
A Diva is a performance cruiser, and many have spent their lives racing round the cans as well as cruising. On a used boat, check the rig closely: chainplates, spreader roots and the condition of the standing rigging, which on a raced boat may be older than the owner thinks. Look at the keel bolts and the area around the keel stub after any grounding among the Swedish skerries. Sails tell their own story; a tired main on a fast hull is a common sight. Older Fabola hulls from the eighties are often well looked after, but deck fittings and window seals deserve a careful look.

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.
A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
