Fast Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Fast Yachts is based in Pinetown, South Africa, and builds performance sailing yachts meant for cruising as much as for racing. The Fast 42 was built there by hand to drawings by Alexander Simonis and Maarten Voogd, who have designed together since 1991. It is a cruiser with racing genes, a little over twelve metres long. A second name in the range belongs to the South African designer Angelo Lavranos, whose surname the Lavranos 37 carries. Lavranos was born in Greece, trained in South Africa and has drawn boats since 1959, with a reputation for light, quick cruiser-racers suited to local conditions. The yard, in short, works with well-known designers and builds for speed.
Our model records list four designs: three sailing yachts and one open sailing boat. The Fast 42, at 12.54 metres, had the longest run and is listed from 1993 to 2014. The other three appear with build years from 2005 to 2012: the Fast 19 at 5.76 metres as the smallest boat, the Lavranos 37 at 11.29 metres and the Fast 54 at 16.46 metres as the largest yacht. More than ten metres separate the smallest from the largest. The number in each name roughly matches the length in feet. None of the designs reaches into recent build years in our data, and the last build year is 2014.
Performance yachts ask more of their owners than a family cruiser. On a used Fast the rig comes first: standing rigging has a working life, and a survey of chainplates, spreader roots and mast step pays for itself. Laminated racing sails age quickly in the sun, so a sail wardrobe should be judged by condition rather than by count. Light, stiff hulls carry high loads into the keel area, which makes the keel bolts and the floors around them worth a look after any grounding. Long passages show up as wear on steering gear and deck hardware. The Fast 19 is a different animal altogether, a small open boat for day sailing that is easily trailed.
