Worth knowing
Fastnet-Marine; cover, cost and conditions
Fastnet Marine was a small British yard, set up in 1973 in Hamble on the south coast of England. Its whole output was essentially one boat, the Fastnet 34. The lines came from the French designer Jean-Marie Finot, who drew a quick cruiser of the early IOR era. Typical of those years are the beamy hull with pronounced tumblehome, the topsides curving inwards towards the deck, and the clipper bow. The boats were hand-laid in GRP with balsa-cored decks. Fitting out later passed to Atlanta Marine, and production ended in 1980. Anyone who finds a Fastnet 34 today is looking at a piece of English yachting history.
Our model records list one design from the yard, the Fastnet 34, a sailing yacht of 10.2 metres with build years from 1971 to 1979. The yard's history gives 1974 as the launch year and runs to 1980, so our records place the period a little earlier. Below the waterline she has a fin keel with iron ballast and a rudder hung on a skeg, a fixed fin that supports the blade. She is rigged as a sloop. Below decks there are six berths in the saloon and forecabin, a U-shaped galley and an enclosed heads. Moderate displacement and plenty of room made her a boat for families and short-handed crews.
A Fastnet 34 is now at least in her mid-forties, so a buyer should look closely at the structure. Iron ballast rusts at the keel joint and the keel bolts deserve a proper inspection. Balsa-cored decks can soak up water around stanchion bases and fittings, which shows up as soft spots underfoot. The skeg and its rudder bearings take loads for decades and are worth checking with the boat out of the water. On the upside, the hull is solid hand-laid glassfibre, the layout is practical, and the boats were drawn for Channel crossings and coastal passages, which is still how most owners sail them.
