Worth knowing
Figareau; cover, cost and conditions
Figareau is the French yard behind the Rhodes 21, a small cruising sailboat drawn by the naval architect Laurent Cordelle and built from 1980. It is a glassfibre monohull, 6.30 metres long and 2.40 metres wide. Its defining feature is the lifting keel: lowered, the boat draws 1.30 metres, raised only 0.30 metres. That lets it slip into shallow coves, dry out on a beach or go onto a trailer. The rig is a masthead sloop, with the forestay running to the top of the mast. The boat was conceived for coastal passages and day trips, where shallow draft opens anchorages that deeper keels cannot reach.
Our model records hold four entries, all filed as sailing boats: two for the Rhodes 21 and two for the Rhodes 24. The Rhodes 21 measures 6.3 metres in both versions, one listed from 1984 to 1996 and one from 1986 to 1992. The Rhodes 24 appears at 6.7 metres from 1986 to 1992 and at 6.91 metres from 1984 to 1996, which makes that version the largest boat of the brand. Lengths sit close together, between 6.3 and 6.91 metres. Our data begin in 1984, a few years after the Rhodes 21 went into production in 1980. No entry reaches into recent build years; the last listed year is 1996.
A lifting keel adds one system to check. On a used Rhodes the keel mechanism, the pin or bolt it turns on and the line or tackle that raises it deserve close inspection, as does the keel case for cracks and weeping. Boats that have been beached often show wear along the front edge of the keel and on the bottom of the hull. The masthead rig is simple, but chainplates and the mast foot should be looked at if the boat is regularly rigged and unrigged for the road. Trailers for boats of this size vary widely, so rollers, brakes and the winch post are part of any purchase. Cabin cushions and headlining reveal whether the deck has been leaking.
