Finn Yachts is a Finnish yard that sells its sailing yachts under the Finn Flyer name, with lines drawn by Karl-Johan Stråhlmann. The yachting press calls the Finn Flyer 36 a performance cruiser, a family boat that also wants to be sailed hard. The hull is vacuum-infused from vinylester resin and E-glass, reinforced with Kevlar and carbon where loads are highest, and the deck uses a Divinycell foam core. The result is a yacht noticeably lighter than most of its size. Spotting one is easy: a fractional rig, a deep bulb keel and a spade rudder. For 2010 the yard announced a smaller Finn Flyer 34.
Our model records list one design, the Finn Flyer 36 as a sailing yacht of 11 metres. Build years run from 2007 to 2017, a little over a decade. Nothing reaches the most recent build years, and the youngest boats are now almost ten years old. The 36 came in two versions: the Club as a stripped-out racer and the CR with more comfort for weekday racing and weekend family sailing. Below deck there are berths for four and room for six, and the cockpit is laid out so one person can handle the boat. Draft is around 2.2 metres, so this is not a boat for thin water.
A light, stiff boat like this needs its structure checked with care. On a used Finn Flyer look closely at the keel attachment and the floors around it, especially if the boat has raced. Foam-cored decks should be sounded for soft spots around stanchions and winches. Carbon or laminate sails age faster than Dacron, so ask for their age and how they were stored. The rig of a fractional sloop is tuned under real tension; inspect the chainplates, spreader roots and the mast step. A record of keel inspections after groundings is worth more to a buyer than a fresh coat of polish.
