Fitzroy Yachts; cover, cost and conditions

Fitzroy Yachts worked out of New Plymouth on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island. The yard was founded in 1997 as part of the Fitzroy Engineering group and was run by Peter White-Robinson. It built one-off yachts to order only, above all large aluminium sailing yachts meant for serious ocean passages rather than marina display. Among its notable builds is the 50 metre Zefira, created with Dubois Naval Architects. The yard ceased trading in early 2014. A Fitzroy is usually recognised by a tall, clean rig over an aluminium hull built for long passages.

Our model records list one design, the Fitzroy 80 as a sailing yacht of 24.66 metres, rounded to 24.7. Build years run from 1997 to 2003, the first years of the yard. Nothing reaches the most recent build years, and since the yard closed in 2014 such yachts only come up on the brokerage market. Because Fitzroy built one-offs, yachts of the same length often differ widely in layout, rig and systems. The 80 in the name stands for a length of roughly eighty feet. At this size the yacht belongs to the class usually run with a professional skipper or permanent crew.

Aluminium yachts of this size need a structured maintenance plan. Galvanic corrosion is the main enemy, so check anodes, bonding and any stainless or bronze fittings set into the hull. Paint systems on aluminium must be kept intact; blisters often hide corrosion underneath. Hydraulic systems, furlers and winches on a big rig need regular service records. Since every Fitzroy was built to an individual specification, the original build file and drawings are valuable when buying. A full survey with ultrasonic thickness readings of the plating and a rig inspection aloft is standard practice before purchase.

What this means for the cover

For the Fitzroy 80 by Fitzroy Yachts series the market value and the replacement cost often differ

widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the Fitzroy 80 by Fitzroy Yachts series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
