Flaar Industrial; cover, cost and conditions

Flaar is a Hungarian brand for one-design racing keelboats and fast cruisers. It was founded by Attila Déry, who studied naval architecture, and Zoltán Mezey, a doctoral researcher in composites, and production started in 2006 on the shore of Lake Balaton at Paloznak. The name blends the English words fly and architecture. Hulls are built in carbon fibre composite, and it shows: light, flat hulls, deep keels and rigs made for class racing. The range also includes rigid inflatables used as coach and support boats.

Our records hold eight Flaar models: four sailing boats (Flaar 18, 20, 24 and 26), two yachts (Flaar 26RR and M37) and two rigid inflatables (Flaar 5.3 and 5.7). The 18 and 26 are the earliest, from 2015. Six lines run into the most recent build years, while the Flaar 24 ran from 2020 to 2024 and the 5.7 RIB from 2018 to 2022. Lengths range from 5.3 metres for the Flaar 5.3 to 11.28 metres for the M37, with the 18 at 5.44, the 24 at 7.23 and both 26s at 8 metres.

These are racing boats first. Carbon hulls are stiff and light but want gentle handling on the crane and a well padded trailer cradle. Many owners keep the smaller boats on a trailer and tow them from regatta to regatta, while the M37 lives on a berth. Racing sails last longer when they are rolled, not folded, and dried before storage.

What this means for the cover

As the Flaar5.3, Flaar 18, Flaar 20 by Flaar Industrial and 3 more series are still in production,

parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the Flaar 24 and Flaar 5.7 by Flaar Industrial series the market value and the replacement

cost often differ widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the Flaar5.3, Flaar 5.7 by Flaar Industrial series: On an inflatable the cause decides,

not the damage: a tear from impact is covered, porous fabric after years in the sun is not.

The outboard belongs in the policy with its serial number.

For the Flaar 18, Flaar 20, Flaar 26 by Flaar Industrial and further series:

On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.

A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.

For the Flaar 26RR, Flaar M37 by Flaar Industrial series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
