Flight Marine works from Chidham, on the edge of Chichester Harbour in West Sussex, a sprawling tidal inlet on England's south coast. Every Chichester Scow is built here. The class takes a traditional scow form whose roots reach back to the nineteenth century and builds it with modern methods and materials. The boats are raced mostly by the clubs around the harbour; at Bosham the fleet sails spring, summer and autumn series as well as a run of Friday evening races. Flight Marine also built the Chichester Pilot, a glassfibre launch drawn by Paul Dewing. The names alone tell you where these boats belong.

The Chichester Scow is the smallest at 3.46 metres, the Chichester Harbour 12 measures 3.64 metres, and the Chichester Pilot, the only motorboat of the brand, reaches 5.99 metres. A scow is a simple boat, but club racing leaves its marks. Look along the gunwale and around the bow for knocks from crowded starts, and check the rudder fittings and foils for play. Sails and running rigging on a boat that races every week age faster than the hull. Tidal water brings sand and mud, so rinse boat and trailer after a session and grease the wheel bearings before the season starts. On the Pilot, the engine service history and the state of the steering are the first things to ask about.
