Folkebådcentralen A/S is a Danish company that has been on the business register since 1980, first under the name Nordic Boats A/S and based in Kerteminde on Funen, with Erik Andreasen named as director. Together with Sven Svendsen, Andreasen created the glassfibre version of the Nordic Folkboat, moulded to follow the dimensions and lines of the clinker wooden hull. The Folkboat itself goes back to a design competition held by the Scandinavian Sailing Federation in 1942 and carries a fractional sloop rig on wooden spars. The company also built the Nordic Cruiser, a motorboat in a 1930s style with varnished wood around the helm and plenty of joinery. As far as can be seen, the business is no longer trading.
Our model records list three designs from three boat types. The Folkebåd appears as a sailing yacht of 7.64 metres from 1961 to 2013, a run of more than five decades. The Dansk Mini 12, a sailing boat of 4.27 metres, is listed only from 1985 to 1992. The Nordic Cruiser, a 7.36 metre motorboat, runs from 2000 to 2019. None of the three lines reaches the most recent build years, and the latest entry ends in 2019.
A glassfibre Folkboat is tough, but the wood on it needs attention. Spars, tiller, rubbing strakes and coamings want fresh varnish every few seasons, and the mast step and chainplates deserve a look on any older boat. The long keel makes the Folkboat steady in a breeze, yet it is worth checking the keel bolts and the area where keel meets hull after a hard grounding. On the Nordic Cruiser, the joinery is part of its appeal and costly to restore, so look for water staining around windows and hatches, and ask for the service history of the diesel.
