Formosa Boat Building Company; cover, cost and conditions
Formosa Boat Building Company was set up in 1969 in Kaohsiung, the port city in southern Taiwan, and built fibreglass sailing yachts, largely for export. Several of its designs came from American naval architects, among them Robert Perry and William Garden. The naming is easy to read: Formosa followed by a number that roughly gives the length in feet, so a Formosa 41 is a little over twelve metres. The Formosa Klipper line follows the same pattern.
Our model records list 25 Formosa models, 23 sailing yachts and two motor yachts, with model years from 1969 to 1999 and none still in production. Lengths run from 9.0 to 20.7 metres, and half of the models sit between 11.4 and 15.5 metres. The numbered range starts with the Formosa 30 at 9.0 metres and climbs through the 41 and 46 to the Formosa 68 at 20.4 metres and the 68 Ketch at 20.7 metres. Seven Klipper models, built from 1974 to 1983, span 10.1 to 16.4 metres, and the Formosa 12 and a motor version of the 42 add two motor yachts of around 12.5 metres.
Most Formosas afloat today are well into their second or third ownership and many have been refitted for long passages. Value depends less on the badge than on what has been renewed: the engine, standing rigging, sails, deck hardware and electronics, and the condition of the hull and teak. On the larger ketches the rig and the interior joinery account for a good share of what a buyer pays.

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For the Formosa 42, Formosa 12 by Formosa Boat Building Company series:
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.
Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
