Hydro-Design; cover, cost and conditions
Hydro-Design is the Norwegian design house founded in 1985 by Egil Ranvig, a designer with a background in racing boats who also created the Hydrolift brand. Under the Cormate name it builds day cruisers and centre console boats from about seven to eleven metres. The hull is the signature: Ranvig works with stepped, deep V bottoms. The Cormate T27 has a 24 degree single step hull, while other models use a 25 degree hull with a step at the transom and air induction, meant to give the driver more control over the running attitude.
Our model records hold nine Cormate designs, five listed as motorboats and four as motor yachts. The oldest is the Cormate T-27 from 2008, at 8.46 metres. The T-24 and Utility 23 joined in 2013, the Super Utility 23 and Chase 34 in 2016, the T-28 in 2018, and the Chase 32, Utility 27 and Super Utility 27 in 2021. Six designs run into the most recent build years, among them the T-27, T-28, Utility 23 and Super Utility 23. The T-24 ended in 2021, the Chase 34 in 2024 and the Chase 32 in 2025. Lengths run from 7.11 metres for the Super Utility 23 to 10.33 metres for the Chase 34; three designs stay under eight metres.
A stepped hull rewards a careful owner. On a used Cormate, inspect the steps and the air intakes for damage, since a chipped step edge changes how the boat runs. Large outboards put real loads into the transom, so look for cracks around the engine brackets and check the steering for play. Many of these boats are driven fast along rocky Norwegian shores, so ask about any groundings and have the hull bottom checked out of the water. Engine hours and service records matter more than the year on the papers.
