Juelsminde Bådebyggeri is the yard behind the Colina sailing yachts. The name simply means the Juelsminde boatbuilders, after the harbour town on the east coast of Jutland where the boats were made. The yard built glassfibre sailing yachts meant to combine classic Danish yacht building with lively sailing and a cosy, practical interior. The Colina L 29 was drawn by Lars Olsen, who had earlier designed the L23; its lines and concept were the starting point for the larger boat. We found no reliable source for the founding date or the founders, so we give none here. The type names L 29, 36 and 41 make up the whole sailing fleet of the yard in our records, and the Colina name on the hull is the easiest way to tell one apart.
Our model records list four designs: three sailing yachts and one boat classed as a motorboat. The oldest line is the Colina 36 at 11.1 metres, listed from 1976 to 1990 and the longest running of the group. The Colina L 29 at 8.86 metres follows from 1978 to 1989, and the Colina 41 at 12.1 metres, the largest, from 1979 to 1986. The Juelsminde Jolle is 5.1 metres long and appears from 1979 to 1986; it is the only one named after the town rather than Colina. None of them reaches the most recent build years. The whole range sits between 1976 and 1990, and three of the four are longer than eight metres.
Every Colina on the water today is a used boat, and each has its own history of owners. Glassfibre hulls of this period age well when looked after, but deck fittings, chainplates and the keel bolts deserve attention after four decades. Standing rigging has a limited life, so the date of the last replacement is a useful question. The interior wood tells a lot about how dry a boat has been kept. Danish boats of this kind were built for short, steep seas and cool summers, and many still sail in the Baltic and the Kattegat. A lift out and a survey before buying show whether the hull, rudder and keel joint are in the condition the price suggests.
