Jutahela; cover, cost and conditions
Jutahela Oy was a Finnish yard based in Seinäjoki, an inland town in South Ostrobothnia. Under the Marina name it built glassfibre sailing yachts meant for the archipelagos and coasts of Scandinavia. The Marina 75 is described as a motorsailer, drawn by Eskil Haldin from Vaasa. The larger Marina 95 came from the board of Åke Sandström, a cruising sloop with a fin keel and masthead rig. Both boats were aimed at families sailing at weekends and during the summer holidays. The company was struck off the Finnish register of limited companies in 2003.
Our model records list two designs, both entered as sailing yachts. The Marina 75 measures 7.72 metres and is recorded with build years from 1969 to 1987. The Marina 95 comes to 9.5 metres, and our records give 1971 to 2001, while the source names 1977 as the start of production. Neither line reaches into the most recent build years. The step from 7.7 to 9.5 metres sums up the range: a compact boat with motorsailer character and a larger, stiffer yacht for longer cruises. Both are sold only second hand today.
Archipelago sailing leaves its marks. Before buying a Marina, check the keel bolts and the joint between keel and hull, because a granite ledge just under the surface is a familiar hazard in Finnish waters. The rudder and its bearings deserve the same attention. On a boat built in the seventies or eighties, look closely at the deck fittings, chainplates and the condition of the teak below. A Marina 75 used as a motorsailer will often have run its engine for many hours, so the service record of the diesel matters as much as the sails.
