Kaarina Yachts; cover, cost and conditions

Kaarina Yachts comes from Finland, and the sources place the yard behind the Seafinn name in Turku. It built sailing yachts in sizes of 37, 39, 41, 53 and 80 feet, spelled sometimes Seafinn and sometimes Sea Finn. Every yacht was built to the buyer's wishes: project management, design, construction and purchasing were handled in one place, and the yard also installed equipment the customer had bought separately. The hulls are glassfibre, deck and cockpit are laid in teak, and below sits a long keel. The Sea Finn 41 has a deck saloon. A broker describes a 1981 Sea Finn 39 as well suited to northern waters and comfortable cruising.

Our model records list four designs, all sailing yachts. The oldest line is the Seafinn 39 at 11.8 metres, listed from 1977 to 1987. The 41 appears twice, as the Sea Finn 41 from 1980 to 1989 and as the Seafinn 41 from 1981 to 1992, both at 12.4 metres and the largest of the group. The Seafinn 37 at 11.05 metres is listed from 1983 to 1992 and is the smallest. None of them reaches the most recent build years; the whole list runs from 1977 to 1992. The spread of lengths is narrow, with only some 1.3 metres between the smallest and the largest. The yard's 53 and 80 foot yachts are not part of our records.

Since each Seafinn was finished to order, no two are quite the same, and a buyer should take time to understand the particular boat. Teak decks of this age may need recaulking or replacement, and the fastenings beneath them deserve a look for leaks into the core or the cabin. A long keel gives a steady motion and good tracking, but it also makes reversing into a tight berth a skill to practise. The deck saloon versions offer a warm, dry place to steer from in cold weather. On a used yacht it is worth checking the engine, the standing rigging and the tanks, and asking which equipment the first owner chose and which has been added since.
