Worth knowing
Kama; cover, cost and conditions
Kama was set up in 1988 and began with sailing boats in plywood, moving to composite construction as the technology developed. The range is made up mostly of dinghies and small keelboats. The Merlin is designed as a safe training boat that draws in beginners while still giving stronger sailors some excitement; it comes with three sail options and works single-handed or with two aboard. The Proton is a one-person keelboat built to the International 2.4mR class rules, 4.2 metres long, 0.85 metres wide and drawing one metre.
Our records list six Kama models: five sailing boats and one motorboat, the Firefly 20. The Merlin opens the list in 2004 and the Proton follows in 2005; the Delta, Robinson and Firefly 20 arrive in 2012 and the Pooh in 2013. All six reach the most recent build years. The sailing boats are compact, from the 2.9 metre Delta through the Pooh and Robinson at 3.65 metres and the Merlin at 3.7 to the Proton at 4.2 metres, while the Firefly 20 stands apart at 6.16 metres.
These are boats for clubs, sailing schools and families, launched from a trolley or a trailer and sailed close to home. Small dinghies often live on open hardstanding, so a fitted tarp and the habit of taking sails and loose fittings home make a real difference. The Proton, with its fixed keel, needs a crane or a deep slipway rather than a beach.
