Karlskronavarvet is a Swedish yard in Karlskrona, and its name turns up on several sailing boats from the 1960s and 1970s. One is the Viggen, a 7.1 metre coastal cruiser drawn by Per Brohäll and built in plastic; production later passed to Albin Marin, which is why the same boat also appears as the Albin Viggen under Albin in our records. The Laurin models go back to the Swedish designer Arvid Laurin, whose designs were built with several Scandinavian yards. The Laurin 32 has a full keel that holds a course well and won friends among long-distance sailors.
Six Karlskronavarvet models appear in our records: five sailing yachts and the Viggen, listed as a sailing boat. Build years span 1961 to 1994. The Laurin 32 runs longest, from 1961 to 1994, with its MK-III version recorded from 1972 to 1983. The Laurin 28 spans 1967 to 1983, the Laurinkoster 1965 to 1973, the OC 35 1965 to 1972 and the Viggen 1965 to 1976. Lengths go from 7.1 metres for the Viggen to 10.7 metres for the OC 35; the Laurin 32, the MK-III and the Laurinkoster share 9.81 metres and the Laurin 28 measures 8.6.
Every one of these boats is decades old now, and its condition says more than the model name. A full-keeled Laurin is happiest on a mooring or a deep berth and comes out by crane in autumn. Teak trim, old wiring and original rigging deserve a close look before a new season, and a dry winter shed helps an older hull more than anything else.
