Kesteloo Watersport; cover, cost and conditions
Kesteloo was a yacht yard in Brouwershaven, a harbour town on the north coast of Schouwen-Duiveland beside the Grevelingenmeer in the Netherlands. The yard made its name with the Polka range, cruising yachts built in seawater-resistant aluminium. J. W. Kesteloo designed them, partly in cooperation with Koopmans, while some Polka models came from the drawing board of E. G. van de Stadt. Hulls were plated in AlMg4 alloy five to six millimetres thick. The Mazurka belongs to the same family: a Mazurka 36 from 1974 is described as an aluminium cruiser built at Kesteloo. The surest way to recognise one is the metal hull with classic Dutch lines.
Our model records list two designs from Kesteloo, both sailing yachts from around 1970. The Polka is entered for build years 1967 to 1976 and measures 8.75 metres. The larger Mazurka follows from 1968 to 1977 at 10.8 metres. The two lines ran side by side for almost a decade, from the earliest entry in 1967 to the latest in 1977. Neither reaches the recent build years, so anyone sailing a Polka or Mazurka today owns a boat that is roughly fifty years old or more. The larger Polka types of 41 or 45 feet that appear on the brokerage market under the yard's name are not part of our list.
Aluminium hulls age differently from glassfibre. The main enemy is galvanic corrosion, so a survey should look closely at areas where stainless fittings, bronze seacocks or a copper-based antifouling meet the alloy, and at the anodes and the electrical installation for stray current. Paint on aluminium needs the right base coat, and blistering paint can hide pitting underneath. On the plus side, a well-kept metal hull shrugs off knocks that would crack a moulded one. Boats of this age have usually been refitted more than once, so check the standing rigging, the engine and the wiring, and ask for records of what was renewed and when. An ultrasonic thickness test of the plating gives a clear picture of the hull.
