Worth knowing

Le Comte; cover, cost and conditions

The story starts with Adolf "Dolf" LeComte, who first exported Dutch built yachts to a growing American market and then opened his own yard at Jutphaas, south of Utrecht. In 1961 the yard went over to glassfibre entirely. The Medalist 33 sloop came first, followed in 1962 by the North East 38, offered as sloop or yawl and drawn by William Tripp Jr. In 1971 the ALC 40, designed by Sparkman & Stephens, took over from the North East 38. The boats were built with solid glassfibre hulls, Airex cored decks and varnished joinery below. A 1974 ALC 40 built at Vianen also has teak side decks. American designers and Dutch craftsmanship sum up the yard.

Our model records list seven sailing yachts between 10.5 and 15.85 metres. The Alc 35 is the smallest, followed by the North-East 38 at 11.67, the Alc 40 at 12.06 and the S&S 40 at 12.07 metres. Above them sit the Fastnet 45 at 13.9, the Alc 46 at 14 and the Ocean Racer 52 at 15.85 metres. The North-East 38 has the earliest build year, 1964, the Fastnet 45 and the Ocean Racer 52 begin in 1965, the Alc 35 and Alc 40 in 1967 and the Alc 46 in 1970. Most lines end between 1978 and 1980. The S&S 40 runs longest, recorded from 1968 to 1990. None of them reaches the recent build years.

These are early glassfibre yachts, and most are now more than half a century old. The solid hulls usually age well, but a cored deck is worth a careful check: moisture in the core shows up around stanchions, cleats and chainplates, and a surveyor with a moisture meter can find it before it spreads. Teak side decks wear thin and their fastenings can let water in. Rigs and rod or wire standing rigging may be original and due for renewal. Many of these boats were built for offshore racing and long passages, so a sound one still makes a fine cruiser, provided the engine and the steering have been kept up.

What this means for the cover

For the S&S 40, Alc 35, Alc 40 by Le Comte and 4 more series there is no list price left.

That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,

and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.

For the S&S 40, Alc 35, Alc 40 by Le Comte and further series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
