Worth knowing
Le Guen-Hemidy; cover, cost and conditions
Le Guen-Hemidy is a French yard that has built aluminium sailing yachts. Its best known range is the Brise de Mer, and the Brise de Mer 38 is an aluminium design from the Finot office. These are sturdy cruising boats built for long passages in the Atlantic and beyond, recognisable by the Brise de Mer name with a number close to the length in feet, the metal hull and the plain, seaworthy lines of the 1970s and 1980s.
Our model records list eight Le Guen-Hemidy designs, seven sailing yachts and one sailing boat. The Brise de Mer series has six entries: the plain Brise de Mer at 9.35 metres, then the 28 at 8.6, the 31 at 9.45, the 34 at 10.45, the 38 at 11.7 and the 43 at 13.2 metres, the longest of all. Alongside sits the 13.1 metre Marie Jeanne 43, built from 1977 to 1996, the longest run in the list. The smallest and oldest boat is the 7.22 metre Mirage 722, built from 1967 to 1975. Build years span 1967 to 1996.
Aluminium cruisers of this kind often head off on long voyages, far from home. Metal hulls ask for steady attention to anodes, paint and any spot where stainless or bronze fittings meet the aluminium. A haul out every season or two keeps the underwater paint in shape for ocean work.

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.

On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.
A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
