Legan was a German brand with its yachts built in Poland. According to a February 2003 report in the German magazine YACHT, the company Legan Segeln & mehr from Kamen in Westphalia took over the range of the former Jantar-Yachting GmbH of Gelsenkirchen, with production in Poland. The boats are glassfibre cruising yachts whose strength lies below deck: a fairly high freeboard and broad hull lines give saloons that are unusually roomy for yachts of this length. The magazine also noted a tidy interior finish, good GRP surfaces and neat deck fittings. That is how a Legan is recognised, by its generous topsides and beamy hull. At the time of the report a trailerable Legan 26 was also announced.
Our model records list two designs, both sailing yachts. The Legan 30 measures 9 metres and is listed for build years 1999 to 2007, while the Legan 34 comes to 10.3 metres and runs from 2000 to 2007. Both lines end in the same year, and neither reaches the most recent build years. According to YACHT, the Legan 30 has a beam of three metres, displaces 3.7 tonnes and carries 27.3 square metres of sail. The Legan 34 is clearly bigger, with 3.5 metres of beam, 5.2 tonnes and 49 square metres. Anyone buying a Legan today gets a yacht that is close to two decades old at the very least.
With yachts of this age, the survey matters more than the brochure. On a used Legan, check the chainplates and the keel bolts, look for osmosis blisters on the underwater hull and ask when the standing rigging was last replaced. The high freeboard brings more windage, so the boat wants a little more attention when berthing in a crosswind. Inside, the large saloon is the main attraction; look under the floorboards for signs of standing water and at the windows for old sealant. Many of these yachts are family cruisers on coastal waters and lakes, so engine hours and service records tell a good part of the story.
