Lemstra; cover, cost and conditions
Lemstra is the name of Dutch yacht designer Hylke Lemstra of Sneek. His designs became classic sailing yachts built and sold as Carena, with the larger boats carrying the Bonaventura name. The hulls use an S-shaped frame section that gives a stable boat with fine sailing manners, and the Bonaventura has a reputation for long passages. Other Carena sizes appear in our records under other Dutch yards, the Carena 33 also under Mulder & Rijke.
Our records hold six Lemstra designs, all sailing yachts: three Carena (33, 36 and 43) and three Bonaventura (44, 45 and 45/50). Build years run from 1967 to 1991. The Carena 33 opens the list in 1967 and stays until 1991, longer than any other model. The Carena 43 follows in 1968, the Bonaventura 45 in 1970, the Bonaventura 44 and 45/50 in 1971 and the Carena 36 in 1972. Lengths go from 9.9 metres for the Carena 33 to 13.62 metres for the Bonaventura 45 and 45/50.
Each of these yachts is a classic now, the youngest from 1991, and condition matters more than the model badge. A heavy cruiser of ten to fourteen metres wants a solid berth, a crane in autumn and a dry place for the winter. A thorough survey of the underwater hull is worth every hour, and original woodwork rewards owners who keep up with the varnish.
