MABI Yachts is a Swedish yard whose boats are sold under the M-Yachts name. Production sits on the Swedish west coast near Lysekil. The flagship is the M 46, drawn by Ron Holland, with lines that recall the classic sailing yachts of the twentieth century: a narrow hull and low freeboard. The construction underneath is thoroughly modern, with a glassfibre laminate over a Divinycell core, infused with vinylester resin. Below the waterline the M 46 has a fin keel and a free-standing spade rudder, and above deck a fractional sloop rig.
Our model records hold two designs, both sailing yachts and both running into the most recent build years. The M 46 starts in 2005 and measures 14.2 metres. The smaller M 40 joined in 2008 at 12.2 metres. The range is therefore narrow and aimed squarely at larger cruising yachts; nothing in the list is shorter than twelve metres. Two metres separate the two lines. The oldest hulls are a little over twenty years old, while the newest come straight from current production, so very different ages sit side by side on the used market.
A cored, infused hull is light and stiff, but it pays to check the deck and hull for moisture around fittings, where water can find its way into the core over the years. On a used M 46 or M 40, a survey with a moisture meter is a sensible first step, followed by a close look at the spade rudder bearings and the keel bolts. Narrow hulls with low freeboard sail well in the archipelago and offshore alike, and many owners use them for long summer cruises. Standing rigging on boats of the first build years may well be due for renewal.
