Mach 2 Boats; cover, cost and conditions

Mach 2 Boats is the work of Australian Andrew McDougall, who built his first Moth in 1970 at the age of 15. He took the Australian national title in 1983 and again in 1984, then spent some sixteen years away from the class running KA Sail, his own windsurfing sail brand. Hydrofoils brought him back. His Bladerider design took to the water in 2006, and the Mach2 followed as a faster successor, built in partnership with the Zhuhai branch of the Australian builder McConaghy in China. The name has a history of its own: John McConaghy had built Moths in the early sixties, and his second one was called the Mach II. On the water a Mach2 looks like any modern foiling Moth, with a slender hull, wide wings for the helm to sit out on and lifting foils under daggerboard and rudder.

Our model records hold a single design, the Moth, filed as a sailing dinghy and 3.35 metres long. It starts with build year 2006 and runs right through to the most recent build years. One line is enough, because the International Moth is a development class: length and beam are limited, while almost everything else may change from one year to the next. A boat from the first seasons and a current one carry the same name yet differ in foils, wings and fittings, so the build year tells more about an individual boat than the label does.

A foiling Moth is light and fast, and its weak points are the parts that make it fly. When looking at a used Mach2, check the foils for chips and delamination along the front and rear edges, look at the daggerboard and rudder where they meet the hull, and test the ride height linkage for play. Wings and tramps take a beating in capsizes and should be inspected for cracks at the mounting points. Carbon rarely shows damage on the surface, so a careful tap test is worth the time. Most owners take the boat to the venue by car, so the road trailer or roof rack deserves the same attention as the boat itself.

Moth

Moth is a sailing boat from Mach 2 Boats, built since 2006.

What this means for the cover

As the Moth by Mach 2 Boats series is still in production,

parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the Moth by Mach 2 Boats series: On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.

A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
