Worth knowing

Mamba Boats AB; cover, cost and conditions

Mamba Boats was a Swedish yard building glassfibre sailing yachts, and it is no longer in business. Besides the sizes listed here, the range also took in designs such as the Mamba 31, 34 and 35. What stands out is that the yard worked with several designers rather than one house architect: Jan and Harry Becker drew the Mamba 29, Bengt Karlsson the Mamba 33 and Bernt Andersson the Mamba 36. The family resemblance is still clear. All three are cruiser-racers with a fin keel, a spade rudder and a fractional rig, set up as a 7/8 rig on the 33 and the 36. Even the little Mamba 29 sleeps six and offers around 1.85 metres of headroom.

Our model records hold three designs, all of them sailing yachts. The Mamba 29 at 8.9 metres had the longest run and is listed from 1977 to 2002. The Mamba 33 measures 9.85 metres and runs from 1981 to 1993. At 11.05 metres the Mamba 36 is the largest boat of the brand, listed from 1982 to 1993. None of the three lines reaches into recent build years, so every Mamba on the water today is a second-hand boat, and even the youngest in our records, a Mamba 29 from 2002, has more than twenty seasons behind it. Barely two metres separate the smallest yacht from the largest.

A Mamba bought today is a boat of forty years or so, and that sets the agenda for a survey. Keel bolts and the joint between keel and hull deserve a close look, as does the spade rudder with its stock and bearings, which take a lot of load on a lively boat. Glassfibre hulls of this age should be checked for osmosis below the waterline. The fractional rig depends on its backstay and shrouds, so the age of the standing rigging matters more than the shine on the deck. Many of these yachts have spent their lives on Scandinavian club racing courses and coastal passages, and a boat with an honest logbook usually tells you more than a fresh coat of antifouling.

What this means for the cover

For the Mamba 29 by Mamba Boats AB series the market value and the replacement cost often differ

widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the Mamba 33 and Mamba 36 by Mamba Boats AB series there is no list price left.

That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,

and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.

For the Mamba 29, Mamba 33, Mamba 36 by Mamba Boats AB series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
