Marcon Marine; cover, cost and conditions
Marcon was the short name of Marine Construction Ltd of Woolston, Southampton. It was founded by Eric White, one of the early builders in glassfibre. After a fire destroyed his first premises, he moved to a run-down yard at Woolston and carried on building the Trident 24 there. The Trident was drawn by Alan Hill, another pioneer of the glassfibre yacht. Early Tridents had a moulded hull with a plywood deck, later ones were all glassfibre, with hulls laid up to Lloyd's specifications. The Cutlass, by White and Hill together, followed in 1967/68 and was reworked in 1974 with more headroom as the Cutlass 27. Marcon sold complete boats and kits, and closed in 1979.
Our model records list two designs, both sailing yachts. The Trident 24 appears with build years 1966 to 1974 and 7.3 metres, the Cutlass 27 with 1970 to 1984 and 8.2 metres. Neither reaches into recent build years. Towards the end the yard sold only bare hulls and kits. The Trident 24 came with a fin keel or triple keels, and a few with a centreboard. The Cutlass 27 has a long keel with a cutaway forefoot and a hull derived from the Folkboat. Tridents are recognised by their stepped coachroof, the Cutlass by its low one.
Every Marcon boat is now at least four decades old, and on a kit-finished hull the quality of the fit-out depends entirely on whoever completed it. Look closely at the deck on early Tridents with plywood decks, where rot can hide under the sheathing. Triple keels and long keels take the ground well on a drying mooring, but the keel bolts and the hull around the bilge keels should be checked for movement. Many Tridents left the yard with small Vire petrol engines and have since been repowered with diesels; ask what was fitted and when. These are seaworthy little cruisers that suit coastal passages.
