The Morin name leads back to the French boatbuilder Jean Morin. A cabinetmaker by trade, he made his reputation building the 470, the two-person dinghy that spread around the world and became an Olympic class in 1976. Among the boats from his yard was the Corsaire, drawn by Jean-Jacques Herbulot in 1954: a 5.50 metre centreboard pocket cruiser built in plywood or in glassfibre, long a familiar sight along the Breton and Atlantic coasts. Morin was one of several builders of the Corsaire, alongside Meulan and Naviking. The US Coast Guard manufacturer register lists the firm Jean Morin Constructions Nautiques at Pessac, registered from 1973 to 1992.
Our model records list three designs, all three sailing boats, built between 1964 and 1980. The Corsaire is the smallest at 5.5 metres and has the longest run, from 1964 to 1977. The Eridan measures 6.8 metres and appears from 1967 to 1975, and the Elor 65 at 6.5 metres spans 1971 to 1980. Between 1971 and 1975 all three were listed at the same time. None of the lines reaches the recent build years; in our records production ends with 1980. Every one of them stays under seven metres.
Boats from this period need an eye for detail. On a plywood Corsaire the first questions concern the wood: soft spots around the centreboard case, along the chines and at the deck joints, and the state of the varnish or paint that keeps water out. Glassfibre hulls of the same age are tougher but may show osmosis blisters, tired deck fittings and a worn centreboard pivot. Many of these boats spend their lives on a trailer, so the trailer itself, its bearings and its lights deserve the same attention as the hull. A well kept example from the sixties or seventies is still a capable coastal boat, and spare parts are often made by hand.
