Morris Yachts; cover, cost and conditions

Morris Yachts comes from Southwest Harbor on Mount Desert Island, on the coast of Maine. Tom Morris, who had worked in banking in Philadelphia, opened the yard in 1972 in a boat shop he built behind the family home. Production of the Frances 26, a small double-ender drawn by Chuck Paine, began in 1974 and started a partnership that lasted until Morris retired. His son Cuyler became president in 2001. In 2003 the yard worked with Sparkman & Stephens on the M36, a daysailer meant to be beautiful and easy to sail, which grew into a range of 29, 36, 42 and 52 feet. Tom Morris died in 2008. What defines the M series is the brief the designers were given: a good-looking boat that is easy to sail with a small crew.

Our model records list 21 designs: 17 sailing yachts, two sailing boats and two motor yachts. The oldest entry is the Morris 46 from 1991, and seven designs reach into the most recent build years: the 29, 29x, 36, 36x, 42, 42x and 52. The x versions of the daysailers are listed from 2011. Alongside them sit the cruising yachts 34, 38, 45, 48 and 51 and the variants 45 RS, 46 RS, 52 RS and 48 GT. The smallest boats are the Morris 29 and 29x at 8.9 metres, the largest the Morris 62 at 18.9 metres, built from 2000 to 2010. Under the Liberty name the records hold two motor yachts of 10.9 and 13.4 metres. Fourteen designs measure twelve metres or more.

A Morris is built by hand in a small Maine yard, and it rewards the same care. Varnished brightwork needs fresh coats every year or two, and teak decks should be checked for loose plugs and worn caulking. Daysailers like these are usually sailed short-handed, so their running rigging and furlers see a lot of use. On a used cruising yacht, ask for the rig's age and survey, look at the chainplates and the keel joint, and check the engine and tankage. A boat that has spent its winters in a shed usually shows it.
