Moto Plast; cover, cost and conditions
The Saturn boats come from a Polish yard that did not start out in boatbuilding. More than thirty years ago the company made plastic parts for cars, among them the radiator grille of the Polonez. In 1998 it began building small sailing yachts, the kind of boat found on the Masurian Lakes in north-east Poland. Since then it has concentrated on one-design keelboats between six and eight metres. The Saturn 25 comes in a touring and a racing version. The Saturn 720 was conceived as an almost uncompromising sports boat with light displacement and a spartan interior, and today it is built only to individual order. All the boats share the Saturn name.
Our model records list five Saturn designs: one sailing boat and four sailing yachts between 6.39 and 7.36 metres. The Saturn 720 at 7.21 metres goes back furthest, to 2001. In 2008 the Saturn 23 GT at 6.98 metres and the Saturn 25 at 7.36 metres were added, and in 2012 the Saturn 21 at 6.39 metres, which we file as a sailing boat. The Saturn 24 at 7.29 metres is listed from 2016 to 2024. The other four all reach into the most recent build years. With less than a metre between the smallest and the largest boat, the range is tightly focused.
One-design keelboats are often raced hard, and a used one shows it. Look at the keel attachment and the hull around it for stress cracks, and ask how often the boat has been lifted in and out, since frequent craning puts loads on the hull. Racing sails wear quickly, so a boat with a recent set is more rewarding to sail than one with tired cloth. On the lighter, sportier designs like the 720, check the deck and bulkheads for flexing. If the boat comes with a trailer, check its condition and that it supports the keel properly. Class measurement papers, where they exist, help when the boat is meant to race.
