Worth knowing
Najadvarvet AB; cover, cost and conditions
Najadvarvet builds sailing yachts in Sweden. Two sailors founded the business in 1967; since 1971 it has been at Henån on the island of Orust on the Swedish west coast, where several well known yacht yards work side by side. The first model was a thirty four footer of 1971. What is built are cruising yachts between thirty and sixty feet, and more than two thousand boats have come out over the years. You recognise them by the long flat sheer, the low deckhouse carried well aft and the very careful joinery below.
Our model records list 38 Najad models, all of them sailing yachts. Recorded build years run from 1968 to 2017. Thirty eight series are recorded: the early Najad 34 and 37; the three figure models 320, 330, 332, 355, 380 and 380 Classic, 390, 400, 405, 410, 440 and 440 CC, 460, 490, 505, 511 and 511 Classic, and the 570; and the racing designs Farr 50 and Farr 60. Lengths run from 9.7 to 18.4 metres, half the models between 10.9 and 15 metres. The three figure number gives the length in decimetres, so a Najad 440 measures around 13.4 metres.
Orust is worth a sentence of its own. Several well known Scandinavian yacht yards sit within a few kilometres of each other on that island, which is not a coincidence: the skills, the suppliers and the people move between them, and a boat built there carries the habits of a whole region rather than of one workshop.
