Worth knowing
Nauta; cover, cost and conditions
Nauta, or Astilleros Nauta in full, is a Spanish yard whose sailing yachts date from the 1970s. Two lines stand out. The West Wind 35 came from the board of Angus Primrose, who also drew for Moody, and is seen as a typical Spanish cruiser-racer of its era, with a heavily laminated hull, a deep keel and a pronounced overhanging bow. The Wind 44 is a German Frers design, laid out for passages on open water. Nauta yachts are recognisable by their classic lines with long overhangs and by interiors with plenty of timber in a traditional layout meant for family cruising. Today they are found only on the second-hand market.
Our model records list four designs, all of them sailing yachts. The oldest is the West Wind, built from 1972 to 1982, followed by the West Wind 35 from 1976 to 1984; both measure 10.69 metres. The larger boats arrived in 1975: the Wind 44 at 13.1 metres, recorded until 1985, and the Wind 46 at 14.07 metres, recorded until 1984. The range therefore falls into two sizes, two yachts just under eleven metres and two over 13 metres. None reaches into recent build years, and production in our data ends with 1985. Every Nauta afloat today is at least four decades old.
A yacht of this age rewards a careful survey. Chainplates, keel bolts and the bond between hull and deck are the first places to look, along with the rudder bearings and any sign of osmosis below the waterline. Solid laminate from the seventies is usually forgiving, but deck cores around fittings can absorb water over the years. Interiors rich in wood need ventilation, and soft patches near hatches or ports tell of old leaks. Rigs on many of these boats have been renewed at least once, so the age of wire and fittings is worth knowing. The Wind 44 and Wind 46 were drawn for open water, and many have made long passages, so an honest logbook is worth reading.
