Nautic-Saintonge; cover, cost and conditions
Nautic-Saintonge is a French sailing yacht yard which a broker's description places in Les Sables d'Olonne on the Atlantic coast. The NS 44 is the boat most often associated with the yard, often offered second hand as the Rorqual NS 44 Ketch and drawn for offshore sailing; the same source names Auzépy-Brenner as designer. Later yachts carry the letters NS and a number close to the length in feet: the NS 40 is 11.97 metres, just over 39 feet, and the NS 80 reaches 24.38 metres, about 80 feet. Earlier designs went by names such as Shark, Scampi, Rorqual and Bermudes.
Our model records include 16 Nautic-Saintonge designs, all sailing yachts. The Shark family (le Shark, Shark 15 and Super Shark) opens the list in 1965 and runs to 1972, with Bermudes, Rorqual and Scampi following from 1967. The NS line counts ten models from the NS 40 to the NS 80, including the NS 44 CC and the Kriter NS 65, most of them built between 1979 and 1986; the NS 44 lasted longest, from 1973 to 1987. Lengths run from 7.75 metres (Shark 15) to 24.38 metres (NS 80). Four models are under ten metres and seven are longer than 15.
Every Nautic-Saintonge afloat today is several decades old, so a survey of hull, rig and engine tells a buyer far more than the model name. The larger NS yachts are berth boats suited to long passages, and on a ketch both masts, their chainplates and the deck fittings deserve regular inspection. The small Shark and Scampi designs under ten metres are much easier to haul out each winter. A record of refits, new sails and engine work adds real value when the boat changes hands.
