The Norfolk boats come from North Norfolk on the east coast of England, close to the Norfolk Broads. Many were first built by Charlie Ward in Holt, and Neil Thompson Boats later carried on building them in North Norfolk. Several designs came from Andrew Wolstenholme, a designer well known on the Broads. The range consisted of small sailing boats and compact cruisers with a traditional look. The Norfolk Smuggler is a gaff rigged cabin boat with a glassfibre hull, drawn as the big sister of the Norfolk Gypsy and meant to carry over the qualities owners liked in the smaller boat. You spot her by the gaff rig and the mast stepped on the cabin top.

Our model records list five designs: three open sailing boats and two sailing yachts. The Norfolk Gypsy comes first, from 1989, followed by the Norfolk Smuggler 25 from 1992, the Norfolk Oyster and Norfolk Urchin from 1993 and the Norfolk Smuggler 30 from 1995. The Smuggler 30 ends in 2001, the other four lines in 2005, and none reaches the most recent build years. At four metres the Norfolk Urchin is the smallest boat, the Oyster measures 5.18 metres and the Gypsy 6.1 metres. Among the yachts the Smuggler 25 reaches 7.69 metres and the Smuggler 30 9.23 metres. Three of the five stay under six and a half metres.

Every Norfolk boat is now at least twenty years old, and condition matters more than the build year. A gaff rig has more parts than a bermudan one: check the gaff jaws, the halyards and the blocks, and look at the mast step on the cabin top, where water can find its way into the deck core. Wooden trim needs oil or varnish each season. The smaller boats spend a lot of time on trailers, so the trailer bearings, rollers and lighting deserve a look. In shallow water such as the Broads a lifting or shallow keel is common; check its pivot and the surrounding hull for wear.
