O'Day; cover, cost and conditions
O'Day was a sailboat builder in Fall River, Massachusetts. George O'Day, a racing sailor who won Olympic gold in the 5.5 Metre class in 1960, founded it in 1958 with a simple aim: glass fibre boats that newcomers could handle easily and buy through a dealer network. He sold the company to Bangor Punta in 1966; Bangor Punta, and O'Day with it, passed to Lear Siegler in 1984, and the yard closed in 1989. The number after the O'Day name is close to the length in feet.
Our records list ten models built between 1970 and 1987. Five are sailing boats, the O'Day 19, 20, 22, 23 and 25, and five are sailing yachts, the 27, 28, 30, 34 and 37. Lengths run from 5.79 metres for the O'Day 19 to 11.28 metres for the O'Day 37. The 22 is the earliest, from 1970; the 20, 23 and 27 follow in 1971, the 37 in 1975 and the 28, 30 and 34 in 1978. Most lines end in 1985, with the O'Day 25 last in 1987.
The boats up to the O'Day 25 are classic trailer sailers, towed to a lake or a coastal ramp and rigged in under an hour. The larger yachts sit on a marina berth. At close to forty years old, any O'Day benefits from a check of the keel or centreboard pivot, chainplates and rudder, and an old hull stays drier with a winter ashore.

On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.
A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
