Ohlson; cover, cost and conditions
The Ohlson name belongs to two brothers, Einar and Carl-Eric Ohlson. They grew up in Hälleviksstrand on the north west coast of Orust, an island with a long boatbuilding tradition, and in 1951 they registered Ingenjörsfirman Bröderna Ohlson AB in Gothenburg. Their reputation rests on 5.5 Metre racing yachts that reached the podium at several Olympic Games and on cruising yachts such as the Ohlson 35, 36 and 38. The early boats were wooden, later ones came in steel, aluminium and fibreglass. An Ohlson is usually easy to spot: a slim, balanced hull drawn for the sea rather than for maximum room below.
Our model records list one design, the Ohlson 8:8, a sailing yacht of 8.8 metres, so the number in the name is simply its length. We record it from 1968 to 1988. Other published sources give a production run of 1970 to 1982 and around 325 boats, designed by Einar Ohlson and built by Bröderna Ohlson AB. The 8:8 has a fibreglass hull, a fin keel with a bulb, a masthead rig and a displacement of roughly 3.6 tonnes. That makes it a family cruiser able to handle open water as well as the coast, and even the youngest boats are now close to 40 years old.
On a used 8:8 the condition counts for far more than the age. Look for osmosis and earlier gelcoat repairs below the waterline, and check the keel bolts and the area where the keel meets the hull. Chainplates and standing rigging are often original or of unknown age and are worth replacing if in doubt. Many boats have been given new engines, sails and electronics over the years, and receipts for that work tell you a lot. A survey before purchase is always worth having. The 8:8 is at home in the Swedish archipelagos and on the Baltic, and plenty of them now sail in the Netherlands, the UK and Greece.

Series by Ohlson, build years and cover
Ohlson 8:8 is a sailing yacht from Ohlson, built from 1968 to 1988.
For the Ohlson 8:8 by Ohlson series there is no list price left.
That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,
and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the Ohlson 8:8 by Ohlson series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
