Worth knowing

Øien Båt AS; cover, cost and conditions

Øien Båt AS builds its boats in Stårheim on the Nordfjord, on Norway's west coast. It began with Leif Øien, who first made plastic containers on his family's farm before he moved on to building boats in glassfibre. That grew into a maker of small working boats designed for the weather, the fishing and the daily routines of the west coast and the north beyond it. The range runs to five or six models between roughly 15 and 20 feet. Øien boats are recognisable by their wide, stable hulls in solid glassfibre, self-draining decks and plenty of open space for fishing gear and passengers. There are no sun pads or fridges here; these are workboats. New owners took over in 2025, and building continues at the same place.

Our model records list one design from the yard, the Oien 620 F, an open motorboat of 6.2 metres. It is entered from build year 2021 and reaches into the most recent build years. Dealer listings give the 620 F a length of about 6.15 metres, a beam of 2.35 metres and a weight of around 500 kilograms. Outboards of 60 to 80 hp are recommended, good for up to 26 knots. The boat seats eight and has a large self-draining deck. Beside the open F version there is the 620 FH with a small cabin, which our records do not list separately, and the yard's other models are not listed either. At just over six metres, the 620 F sits at the larger end of the Øien range.

An open boat that lives on the Norwegian coast takes some weather, so care centres on the deck and the transom. The scuppers of the self-draining deck must stay clear, and the transom, which carries a sizeable outboard, should be checked for cracks around the bolts. Glassfibre on a hull used near rocks will show scrapes along the keel line, which are easy to repair before water reaches the laminate. On a used 620 F, look at the engine hours and service record, the steering and the fuel system, and check whether the boat has spent its winters ashore. Many are used hard for fishing, so the state of rod holders, cleats and rub rails tells a lot about how it was treated.
