One Boats AB came from Storebro in Sweden. The yard built the One 40, a cruising yacht drawn by the Finnish designer Guy Lönngren and presented in the American sailing press as a coastal cruiser full of fresh ideas. The hull is shallow and dish-shaped in section, with a fine entry and a broad plan view; on a length just under 40 feet it carries some 4.5 metres of beam but only about 2.6 metres at the waterline. Instead of a fixed keel she has a hydraulically controlled centreboard that hinges up beneath the canoe body. Below, a raised saloon with soft, rounded shapes owes more to motor yachts than to traditional sailing boats.
Our model records list one design, the One 40 sailing yacht at 11.95 metres, built from 1997 to 2004. No later build years appear, so every One 40 is now more than twenty years old. The draft is remarkable: about 0.95 metres with the board raised and just over three metres with it fully down. Stability comes from an internal lead weight that slides from side to side and from water ballast tanks on both sides. The rig is conventional, with a short sprit for an asymmetric spinnaker, and the cockpit is large.
A One 40 combines several systems that most yachts do without, and each of them needs attention on a used boat. Run the centreboard up and down, check the hydraulic rams, hoses and pivot for wear, and look at the case for signs of hard groundings. The sliding ballast track and its drive should move freely, and the water ballast tanks, valves and pumps must be tight. Beyond that, the usual checks for a yacht of this age apply: standing rigging, sails, engine hours and the condition of the deck fittings. A survey by someone familiar with lifting keels is money well spent.
