Sunwind is the name one Finnish yard carried through a string of owners at Nykarleby, on the Ostrobothnian coast. The site started in 1964 as Nykarleby Båtvarv, set up by Sune Storbjörk to build wooden boats. After a bankruptcy, the newly formed Oy Nykra Ab took over in 1972 and switched to fibreglass sailing boats. The company name Oy Sunwind Ab appears in 1986 and 1987, and from 1993 to 1997 Heinz Chanton ran the business as Sunwind Yacht. The designer most closely tied to the brand was the Swede Tord Sundén. Later the production site passed to Botnia Marin, while the Sunwind name went to Brüggli Werft in Romanshorn.

Our model records list six Sunwind designs: five sailing yachts and one smaller sailing boat. Five of them begin with build year 1993, namely the Sunwind 221, 271, 301, 312 and 351, and the Sunwind 280 joined in 2003. The 221 measures 6.6 metres and is listed up to 2013. The 271 at 8.22 metres ends in 2005, while the 301 at 9.25, the 312 at 9.37 and the 351 at 10.65 metres all run to 2012. The Sunwind 280 at 8.54 metres lasts longest, with its final entry in 2017. None of the six lines reaches into the most recent build years. Three designs stay under nine metres, three go beyond, and the 351 is the largest yacht of the brand.

A Sunwind on the market today is a fibreglass cruiser of the nineties or early two thousands, and it deserves the checks such a boat always needs. Look at chainplates and keel bolts, the age of the standing rigging and the sails, and any sign of osmosis below the waterline. Boats from the Gulf of Bothnia usually spend long winters ashore, which is kind to the hull but hard on hoses and seals. Many owners sail the rocky archipelagos of Finland and Sweden, so a careful look at the keel joint and the front edge of the keel is worthwhile. A survey before purchase and a folder of refit receipts tell more than the build year alone.
