Pacific Seacraft Corp; cover, cost and conditions

Pacific Seacraft was set up in Southern California in 1976 by Henry Mohrschladt and Mike Howarth, who had met while working at Pacific Trawler. Their first boat was the Pacific Seacraft 25, drawn by Mohrschladt himself, and the Mariah 31 and Orion 27 came next. The name that shaped the yard, though, was the naval architect W.I.B. Crealock. His 37 was the first Crealock design the company built, using moulds bought from a small outfit called Cruising Consultants in Newport Beach. That link is written into the range itself: the Crealock 34, 37 and 44 carry the designer's name, alongside older names such as Mariah, Orion, Dana and Flicka.

Our model records hold ten designs: six sailing yachts and four smaller sailing boats. Build years run from 1975 to 2003, and none of the lines reaches into recent production. The earliest entries are the Mariah 31 from 1975, the Pacific Seacraft 25 and the Flicka from 1976 and the Orion 27 from 1977. The Crealock 34, 37 and 44 are listed from 1989, as are the Dana 24 and the Flicka 20. The Pacific Seacraft 31 has the longest run, from 1986 to 2003. The Flicka is the smallest boat at 6.1 metres, the Crealock 44 the largest at 13.4 metres. Four designs stay below eight metres and three are longer than ten.

Many of these yachts were bought to go a long way, and some still do. When looking at one secondhand, it pays to check the chainplates and the hull to deck joint, the condition of the standing rigging and the age of the sails. Older cruising boats often carry years of added kit such as wind vane steering, solar panels and extra tankage, so it is worth knowing what has been fitted and how well. Engines from the eighties and nineties may have been replaced, which is worth confirming with receipts. Paperwork from previous refits tells you a great deal about how a boat has been treated and where it has been.
